Getting to Naivasha
Naivasha is one of the most accessible nature destinations in Kenya. Located approximately 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, the journey typically takes between one and two hours by car depending on traffic conditions.
Most visitors travel to Naivasha by road, passing through the scenic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, drivers often stop briefly at the Rift Valley Viewpoint to take in the panoramic escarpment views before descending toward the valley floor and continuing toward Naivasha town.
Via the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway (A104)
The most common route to Naivasha is via the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, also known as the A104. This route passes through areas such as Limuru and Mai Mahiu before descending into the Rift Valley and continuing toward Naivasha.
It is the most direct and widely used road, especially for travellers coming from central Nairobi, Westlands, the Nairobi Expressway, or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The road is generally in good condition and offers scenic views of the Rift Valley escarpment along the way.
Via Limuru and Mai Mahiu
Another commonly used route follows Limuru Road toward Limuru town before connecting to the Mai Mahiu–Naivasha road. This route passes through highland landscapes before descending the escarpment into the Rift Valley.
Many travellers enjoy this drive because it combines cooler highland scenery with the dramatic Rift Valley descent. However, certain sections near Mai Mahiu can occasionally experience heavy truck traffic, especially during peak transport hours.
Via Nakuru
If you are travelling from western Kenya or from destinations such as Nakuru, Eldoret, or the Maasai Mara via Narok, Naivasha is easily reached using the same Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. From Nakuru, the drive to Naivasha typically takes about one hour depending on traffic and road conditions.
This route is commonly used by travellers exploring multiple destinations within the Great Rift Valley.
Public Transport (Matatus & Buses)
Naivasha is well connected by public transport. Matatus and buses regularly travel between Nairobi and Naivasha, with most departing from Nairobi’s city centre transport stages. The journey typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and passenger stops along the way.
Once in Naivasha town, visitors can take local taxis or short matatu rides to reach areas around Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate National Park, or nearby lodges and camps.
Taxis & Ride-Hailing Services
Private taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt are also available for travel between Nairobi and Naivasha. Many visitors prefer this option for convenience, particularly when travelling with luggage or planning to visit multiple attractions around the lake.
While it is usually easy to arrange transport from Nairobi to Naivasha, visitors staying in more remote lodges around the lake are often advised to plan their return transport in advance, especially during weekdays or off-peak travel times.
Safe travels! A beautiful escape awaits you just around the corner.
