How To Get To Naivasha From Nairobi
Travelling from Nairobi to Naivasha is one of the most scenic short journeys in Kenya. The distance between the two destinations is roughly 90 kilometres, but the route includes a dramatic descent from the cool highlands of Limuru into the expansive floor of the Great Rift Valley. Because of this geography, travellers have several transport options, each offering a different balance of scenery, speed, and convenience.
Below are the main ways visitors travel from Nairobi to Naivasha.
Driving via the Maai Mahiu Road (The Classic Rift Valley Route)
The most iconic route into the Rift Valley is the Maai Mahiu Road, often referred to as the “Old Road.” This route branches from the main Nairobi–Nakuru highway near Limuru, a highland town famous for its cool climate, tea plantations, and frequent morning mist.
As you leave Limuru, the road begins a dramatic descent down the Kikuyu Escarpment, winding through steep bends toward the valley floor. Along the way, travellers reach the famous Great Rift Valley Viewpoint, one of the most photographed viewpoints in Kenya. From this elevated vantage point, visitors can see the sweeping Rift Valley landscape stretching toward the distant volcanic peaks of Mount Longonot and Mount Suswa.
Although the scenery is spectacular, the road is also a major freight route used by trucks transporting goods across East Africa. Heavy traffic from fuel tankers, cargo trucks and buses going upcountry if not to other East African countries can slow the journey, especially on steep bends where overtaking is limited.
For travellers driving themselves or using a private taxi, the journey via Maai Mahiu typically takes between 2.5 and 4 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
Estimated fuel costs for a round trip usually range between KSh 3,000 and KSh 3,500.
Driving via the Njabini / Flyover Route (The Faster Alternative)
For travellers who prefer a smoother and more predictable drive, the Njabini or Flyover Route provides a modern alternative.
This road remains on the Kinangop Plateau for much longer before descending gradually into Naivasha. Because it bypasses the steepest escarpment sections and avoids much of the heavy truck traffic, it generally allows for faster and more consistent travel speeds.
While this route does not offer the dramatic cliffside views of the Maai Mahiu road, it still provides beautiful wide-angle scenery across the plateau and distant glimpses of the Rift Valley as you approach Naivasha.
Travel time via the Flyover route is typically 1.5 to 2 hours, making it the preferred option for travellers who want a quicker and more predictable journey.
Fuel costs for the round trip are similar to the older route, usually between KSh 2,500 and KSh 3,000.
Travelling by Matatu (Public Transport)
For budget travellers, matatus provide the most affordable and commonly used transport option between Nairobi and Naivasha.
Matatus are shared minibuses that depart frequently from Nyamakima and Accra Road stages in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Passengers board a van labelled “Naivasha” and wait until all seats are filled before departure.
Most matatu drivers take the Maai Mahiu route, as it is shorter in distance. While the ride can be lively and fast-paced, matatus are often efficient at navigating traffic along the escarpment.
The journey typically takes about two to two and a half hours, although travellers should also allow time for the matatu to fill with passengers before departure.
Fares usually range from KSh 400 to KSh 700, depending on the time of day and demand.
Passengers are dropped at the Naivasha Town stage, from where a short boda boda ride or taxi is required to reach the lakeside hotels and attractions.
Travelling by SGR Train
Another option for reaching the Rift Valley is the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which offers a scenic rail journey from Nairobi.
Trains depart from Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau and pass through tunnels in the escarpment before emerging onto the Rift Valley floor. The ride itself takes about 1.5 hours and offers views of landscapes that are not visible from the highway.
However, the station serving Naivasha is located in Maai Mahiu, approximately 35 kilometres from Lake Naivasha. Because of this, travellers must arrange a taxi or transfer to reach the resort areas around the lake.
Although the train ticket is relatively inexpensive—around KSh 600—the total travel time including transfers can reach four to five hours, depending on connections and transport availability.
Charter Flights from Nairobi
For travellers seeking the fastest and most scenic arrival, charter flights from Wilson Airport provide a direct route into the Rift Valley.
These small aircraft flights typically take 30 to 45 minutes, offering spectacular aerial views of the Ngong Hills, volcanic craters, and Lake Naivasha.
Many luxury lodges and private conservancies around the lake have nearby airstrips, allowing guests to land just minutes from their accommodation.
Charter flights are the most premium option, with seats usually costing between $200 and $400 per person on shared charters, while full private charters can cost significantly more.
Choosing the Best Way to Reach Naivasha
Each travel option offers a different way to experience the journey from Nairobi to Naivasha.
The Maai Mahiu road provides the most dramatic views of the Rift Valley, while the Njabini route offers a faster and more comfortable drive. Matatus are the most affordable option for independent travellers, while taxis and charter flights provide added comfort and convenience.
Regardless of the route you choose, the journey into the Great Rift Valley is an unforgettable introduction to one of Kenya’s most beautiful destinations.
