Mvuke Spa Geothermal Spa
Located deep within Hell’s Gate National Park, the Olkaria Geothermal Spa, commonly known as Mvuke Spa (from the Swahili word for steam), is one of the most unique wellness experiences in Kenya. Managed by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the spa is the largest natural geothermal spa in Africa, transforming geothermal energy from nearby power plants into a relaxing lakeside-style bathing experience.
Set within the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley, the spa combines geothermal science with leisure and wellness. Visitors soak in warm mineral pools while surrounded by rugged cliffs, rising geothermal steam, and the vast open scenery that defines the Olkaria geothermal fields.
Geothermal Pools and Thermal Experience
The spa’s centerpiece is a series of three large cascading lagoons filled with mineral-rich geothermal water. The water originates from deep underground reservoirs where temperatures can reach nearly 150°C, before being cooled to a comfortable bathing range of 30°C to 40°C.
The pools are arranged in a tiered system:
Upper Pool – The Hottest Pool
The first lagoon is the warmest and closest to the geothermal source. It provides a deeply relaxing soak and is particularly popular with visitors seeking muscle relaxation after hiking or cycling in the park.
Middle Pool – Balanced Warmth
The middle lagoon offers a slightly cooler temperature, making it ideal for longer swims and more leisurely bathing.
Lower Pool – The Coolest Pool
The final lagoon is the most moderate in temperature and often the most comfortable for extended relaxation.
The geothermal water is rich in sulfur and silica, minerals known for their potential benefits for skin health, muscle recovery, and overall relaxation.
Architecture and Setting
One of the spa’s most impressive features is its modern architectural design, which blends clean lines with the rugged volcanic landscape surrounding it.
The pools are arranged in an amphitheatre-style layout, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Rift Valley cliffs and geothermal steam plumes rising from nearby power stations. The contrast between sleek infrastructure and the raw geothermal environment creates a striking setting rarely found in traditional spa destinations.
The main complex includes a restaurant and bar, spacious changing rooms with lockers, and well-maintained shower facilities. Outside, guests can relax on sunbeds and shaded loungers, giving the spa a relaxed resort-like atmosphere despite its location in the middle of a volcanic wilderness.

The Perfect End to a Hell’s Gate Adventure
For many travelers, a visit to Mvuke Spa serves as the perfect conclusion to a day exploring Hell’s Gate National Park. After cycling through the park’s dramatic valleys, hiking the gorges, or exploring the surrounding geothermal landscapes, soaking in the warm mineral pools provides a deeply relaxing way to unwind.
As evening approaches, the spa becomes especially atmospheric. Steam drifts across the pools while the sun sets over the Rift Valley escarpment, creating one of the most memorable relaxation experiences in the Naivasha region.
For visitors exploring Naivasha and the wider Rift Valley, the Olkaria Geothermal Spa offers a rare combination of nature, science, and wellness, making it one of the most distinctive attractions in Kenya.
