The project was developed by Dowgate Properties, founded by James Hoddell, with the vision of creating a premium roadside retail experience that serves the high traffic volume along the Nairobi–Nakuru corridor. Construction began in January 2021 and was completed in April 2022, covering approximately 5,100 square metres of retail and hospitality space. The centre was strategically positioned to serve an estimated 100,000 vehicles that pass through the highway weekly.

Architecturally, the centre is recognized for its climate-responsive and award-winning design. It won the Best Retail Development (Under 15,000m²) award at the Africa Property Investment Summit in 2023. The architectural collaboration involved Tectura International and Studio JDV, resulting in a distinctive structure featuring a prominent roof and tower design that promotes natural ventilation and provides extensive shading to reduce energy reliance.

The centre incorporates modern technical infrastructure to enhance visitor convenience. It is equipped with cloud-managed indoor and outdoor wireless access points that provide secure, high-speed Wi-Fi across retail, dining, and garden areas. It also hosted Kenya’s first electric vehicle charging station outside Nairobi, positioning it as a forward-thinking transport hub within the Rift Valley region.

Safari Centre Naivasha functions as a multi-purpose transit hub offering supermarket shopping, restaurants, cafés, fuel services, landscaped relaxation zones, and clean restroom facilities. It also supports local enterprise through curated Maasai market spaces and partnerships with Rift Valley farmers who supply fresh produce to the supermarkets and eateries within the complex.

Beyond retail, the centre plays a significant regional role as a tourism gateway and meeting point for visitors heading to Hell’s Gate National Park, Mount Longonot, and Lake Naivasha. It also serves as a key logistical support location during major international events such as the WRC Safari Rally, accommodating large volumes of tourists and event participants.

Safari Centre Naivasha stands as a landmark infrastructural development in the Great Rift Valley, blending architecture, sustainability, connectivity, and commercial convenience into one strategically located highway destination.
